Essay

Gato Roboto has the unique characteristic of deliberetly changing a pre-defined genre
too far from its inception. As "it manages to hit some of Metroid’s high points, but
also struggles to find a unique identity"(Hillard).

Gato Roboto is a compound of two words, much like the term Metroid and Vania.
Gato is cat. While Roboto is Robot. Could it mean Kiki is a Robotvania ? or a
Gat-roid? Well, part of its charm is its play on identity. As did Metroid so many
years after, but is it capturing the moment or playing into the same composition?

Playing relieves an intense pressure..."when you’re in your mech, you stomp around loudly,
making clanks and bangs."(MetroidvaniaReview). The mech's weight predicated by the small
force of paws and meows defintely do not reinvent the genre but change the necessary
conditions for someone like Samus Arin or a Simon Belmont to necessitate their identities
in order to subdue the Metroid or Dracula.

The game of cat and mouse is further explored once more when " You do get the chance to go off the
beaten path and explore a little if you wish, but the game rarely forces you to backtrack
and retread old ground" (Seagrave). Much in the same vain as a tired trope, the story and gameplay
share that unique quality of changing the formula and not its genre. I think Gato Roboto explicitly set
out to do so, especially considering its short experience.

Even so, the animation boasts an intense attention to detail which inevitably culminate in
"a charming premise and competently familiar design." (Brown). Furthermore, while it is a short game
"Gato Roboto excels, and challenges you, in its boss fights" (Ahern) much in the same vain as earlier
titles in the Metroid series albeit without the unecessary backtracking and confusing map.
